GORHAM, Maine   –  Freshman forward Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team has been named the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 12.

It is the first weekly accolade for the Huskies' forward who had previously been selected to the MWBCA Rookie Honor Roll on three occasions (November 29, January 17 and January 31).  Eells is one of three Southern Maine rookies to earn honor roll mention throughout the season, joining freshman guards Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) and Katie Howe (Goffstown, N.H.).  Luckhardt has been named to the honor roll twice (November 22, December 6) and Howe once (February 7).

Eells made the leap to Rookie of the Week honors helping the Huskies to a 2-0 week in Little East Conference play averaging 8.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game.  Earning wins on the road, Eells has seven points, a team-high 11 rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots in Southern Maine's 46-42 win over UMass Boston.  Eells was instrumental in the Huskies' pivotal fourth quarter, in which they outscored the Beacons 19-9, grabbing six of her rebounds, scoring four points and blocking two shots.  Eells' play in the paint allowed USM to rally from a 33-27 fourth quarter deficit.   On Saturday, Eells was one of three Huskies in double-figures scoring en route to a 57-50 victory at Rhode Island College.  Eells scored 10 points to compliment her eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

Playing in all 23 games this season with 19 starts, Eells is averaging 7.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 blocked shots per game.  She has a season and career-high of 13 points in a 61-60 win over Plymouth State (January 25), and 12 rebounds against Rhode Island College (January 11).  Eells is fifth in the Little East Conference in blocked shots averaging 1.0 per game.

Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) at Plymouth State for a Little East Conference game.
