#3 UMass Boston Downs #6 Southern Maine to Advance in LEC Tourney

BOSTON -- Junior Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and dished off one assist to lead the third-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons to a 4-1 victory over the sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening in a first-round game of the 2018 Little East Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.

The Beacons, now 9-9-2 overall and winners in their last three matches, will move on to Saturday's semi-final round to play second-seeded Keene State College.  That game will be played at top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University.  The Huskies, making their first appearance in the LEC tournament since 2008, finished the season 3-13-3 overall.

DeSouza put the home side up 1-0 in the 35th minute converting cross from sophomore Julio DaSilva (Icara, Brazil).  That would be the only scoring in the opening 45 minutes.

DaSilva made it 2-0 in the 51st minute heading in a cross from DeSouza.  Six minutes later, sophomore Josh Crespo (Curitiba, Brazil) put the Beacons up 3-0 with a low drive inside the near post.  DaSilva picked up his second assist of the match on the play.

Southern Maine pushed numbers forward in an attempt to generate more offense and finally got on the board in the 59th minute.  Junior Sam Anderson (Middletown, Conn./Bristol Eastern) tapped the ball home after sophomore Jonata Mbongo (Portland, Maine/Deering) made a great individual run through the Beacon defense before chipping a shot past UMB junior goalkeeper Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.).

DeSouza put the icing on the cake for the Beacons beating USM senior keeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/MDI) after some clever passing from rookies Jonathan Rodrigues (Brockton, Mass.) and Riven Rodrigues (Brockton, Mass.).

Castro-Dreher finished the match stopping three shots for his eighth win of the season.  Hulbert recorded two saves.

The Beacons had a 12-7 edge in shots during the match, and had all three corner kicks.
