Eastern Conn. Pulls Away in Second Half, Downs Southern Maine 16-9
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team scored four goals in the first five minutes to the third quarter to break a 6-6 halftime tie and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine 16-9 in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon at the ECSU Mansfield Athletic Complex.
The win was the third straight for the Warriors, and lifts their record to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Huskies dropped their second straight to slide to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in LEC games.
Tied at halftime, the Warriors wasted little time grabbing the advantage in the third quarter as junior All-American Mike Devine (Cheshire, Conn.) scored 26 seconds into the quarter. Classmate Mike Jordan (Cheshire, Conn.) found the net less than a minute later, and senior Kevin Fechtmann (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Zach Thresher (Somers, Conn.) would score before the quarter was five minutes old to open up a 10-6 Warrior lead.
Senior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) got one back for the Huskies off a feed from senior Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) seven seconds after the Thresher goal, but that would be as close as the Huskies would get as Jordan added two more goals before the end of the quarter to make it 12-7 after three periods.
Baker and senior Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) led the Huskies with two goals apiece. Hamilton also added an assist. Senior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) had a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine), who came on for senior starter Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in the second quarter, made nine saves and took the loss.
Jordan finished with four goals to pace the Warriors' offense. Junior Trevor Morrissette (Bedford, N.H.) had three goals, and Thresher finished with two markers and an assist. Devine and Fechtmann each contributed a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, Mass./Hyde [CT]) stopped eight shots over the first 50:34 to earn the win. Freshman Brendan Gillotti (Danbury, (Conn.) and senior Drew Deane (Vernon, Conn.) combined to make five saves over the final 9:26.
The Warriors opened the game with three consecutive goals before the Huskies got on the board via Hamilton's first goal. After freshman Mike Dellanno (Wakefield, Mass.) scored to make it 4-1 for the home side, the Huskies scored three consecutive goals in the final five minutes to tie the game 4-4. Sophomore Dan St. Peter (Windham, Maine), Hamilton and White had the USM goals.
The teams traded goals in the second quarter with Eastern taking a one-goal lead twice, and USM tying the score, to make it 6-6 at the break.
