BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) scored three consecutive goals to break a 3-3 tie in the first period, and the University of New England went on to take a 12-8 win over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference men's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

The win gives the Nor'easters a 2-0 start on the season, while the Huskies dip to 0-3.  UNE has won the last four meetings between the two teams.

Sophomore Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored a match-high four goals to lead the way for the Nor'easters. Thomas finished with a hat trick and junior Mike Allan (Billerica, Mass.) added a pair of scores.  Sophomore Geoff Bruno (Durham, Conn.) contributed a pair of assists for Big Blue.

For Southern Maine, senior Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine) tallied three goals, while classmate Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) notched two markers.

After play went back-and-forth in the early going, Thomas' three straight goals gave the Nor'easters a 6-3 lead at the end of one.  UNE would score two of the three second-period goals to take an 8-4 advantage into intermission.

USM was able to get as close as two (9-7) late in the third frame on goals 51 seconds apart by Baker and Hamilton, but Allan scored with 13 seconds remaining to stem the tide.

Senior Nick McMahon (Westfield, Mass.) played a strong game defensively for the Nor'easters, grabbing six ground balls and recording five caused turnovers.  Senior goalkeeper Jay Letendre (Southington, Conn.) stopped 12 shots in the win.

Senior Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Dylan Kenney (Portland, Maine) had seven ground balls apiece for the Huskies, with Kenney adding three caused turnovers. Rookie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) had 12 saves in goal for USM.

UNE returns to action Saturday with a home match versus Plymouth State University at 1 p.m. The Huskies are idle until March 16 when they host Maine Maritime Academy at 1 p.m.
