NEW LONDON, Conn. – Justin Kane scored 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field to lead four players in double figures as the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the second game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip Off Classic.
With the loss Southern Maine evens out its record at 1-1. Coast Guard improves to 1-1 with the win. Southern Maine returns to action tomorrow at Connecticut College in its second game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic on Sunday (2:00 p.m.).
Kane led all scorers as the Bears shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field, including 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from three-point range. J.T. Cox added 12 off of the bench, while Noah Baldez and Micah Baldez each scored 10 points.
Junior Kevin Weisser (Windham, Maine) led the Huskies with eight points, while sophomore Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) added six. Junior Bryon McMillian (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy) had five points.
USM started the game in front of USCGA, and led 9 – 1 with 15:37 left in the opening half, and led the Bears until the midway point of the half, 11-10, before Coast Guard closed out final 10 minutes on a 38-10 run to take a dominating 48-21 lead at the break. From there, the Coast Guard maintained its sizeable lead to take the win.
