Kalagias Named GNAC Golfer of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) announced today that University of Southern Maine junior Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) has been selected as the Golfer of the Week for the period of September 24-30.
In two events last week, Kalagias helped the Huskies sweep the University of New England Invitational on Thursday and the unique USM Cup competition on Friday. Kalagias, the 2016 GNAC Rookie of the Year, is the second USM golfer to be honored this fall joining junior Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) as recipients of GNAC weekly accolades.
At the UNE tournament, Kalagias carded a 2-over par 71 at the Cape Arundel Golf Club (Kennebunkport, Maine) to earn the low medalist honor. USM topped the field of six teams with its score of 298.
Playing on USM's home course, the Gorham Country Club, the next afternoon in the USM Cup, Kalagias combined with classmate Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) to shoot an event-record 7-under par 64. The unique 18-hole event is broken into three segments with the two-man groups playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of modified alternate shot. Southern Maine took the team title for the third straight year with a combined score of 203 (-10).
The Huskies, who have won their last three events, and five of seven this fall, are back on the links Thursday when they play in the Maine Maritime Academy Invitational at the Augusta CC.
