Huskies’ Samantha Ellis Named 2018 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year

GORHAM, Maine – Led by 2018 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) three members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' field hockey team are being recognized by the Little East Conference with post-season honors after completing an outstanding 2018 season following a vote of the league's 13 head coaches.

Junior Makayla Garvin (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) and Ellis were both second team All-Little East Conference selections, while junior Abbie Staples (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) earned an honorable mention All-LEC nod.

In her second season with the Huskies, Staples, a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete and Business Management major, had a breakout season scoring nine goals and adding three assists for 21 points while patrolling the Huskies' midfield.  With a knack for scoring in big spots, Staples recorded seven of her nine goals and all three of her assists in LEC action.  Notching a pair of game-winning goals, both in conference action, Staples scored USM's decisive goal in a 3-1 win over regular season champion Castleton University (October 20), helping the Huskies' secure the number three seed in the LEC tournament.  In USM's 2-1 quarterfinal win over Fitchburg State (October 30), Staples scored the game-tying goal en route to the comeback win.

A three-year member of the Huskies' field hockey team, Garvin served as one of the 2018 captains and led Southern Maine's defense with steady play and ability to create offensively from the back line. Scoring one goal and one assist during the season, Garvin's lone goal was a big one tallying the game-winner in the Huskies' 4-0 conference win at Framingham State (October 9.  Garvin also recorded an assist on the game-winner in a 2-1 victory versus LEC foe Plymouth State (October 17).  Garvin also recorded a defensive save in USM's 3-1 win over Castleton (October 20), and played a big role in helping USM's four shutout victories and 1.84 goals against average, which ranks third in the Little East.

Just the second Southern Maine field hockey player to earn Little East Conference Rookie of the Year honors, Ellis joins former goalkeeper standout Allie Hill '09 (Cape Elizabeth, Maine).  Also earning second team all-conference honors, Ellis led the Huskies in scoring, totaling 11 goals and five assists for 27 points in her first collegiate season.   Her 11 goals finished tied for 12thin the LEC, while her 27 points are tied for 13th in the league.  Ellis' 11th goal of the season gave Southern Maine a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime win over Fitchburg State in the quarterfinals of the 2018 LEC tournament.

A speedy forward with a nose for the ball, Ellis had a pair of game-winning goals during the season, and recorded her first intercollegiate hat trick in USM's 4-0 win over Framingham State (October 9). Named the LEC Rookie of the Week once during the season, Ellis' 11 goals and five assists for 27 points are tied for 17th in single-season records with former four-time NFHCA All-Region pick Renee Heath Towne (Brunswick, Maine) who recorded the same totals (11 goals, five assists) in her freshman season at USM.

Southern Maine finished the 2018 season with a 13-8 overall record and a 9-3 mark in the Little East Conference, and advanced to the semifinals of the LEC tournament before falling to eventual champion Keene State.  During the season, veteran head coach Bonny Brown-Denico recorded her 200th career win.
