No. 20 Bates Shuts Out Southern Maine 4-0

GORHAM, Maine  – Junior Adah Lindquist (Wayne, Pa./Consetoga) scored a pair of goals to highlight a 4-0 win for the No. 20 Bates College Bobcats over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Bates improves to 8-5 on the season earning its fifth consecutive win.  Southern Maine drops to 5-12 with the loss.

Bates took the early lead over the Huskies scoring in the second minute of the game as junior Jessie Moriary (Springfield, Mass.) hustled to get her stick on the ball and sent a shot to the far post, beating USM's keeper.  Despite giving up the early goal, USM hung tough, and kept the game a one-goal game, seemingly until the halftime break, but Bobcats' senior Sydney Beres (New York, N.Y./Fieldston School) redirected a pass across the goal mouth from classmate Lauren Foster (Pawling, N.Y./Kent School) as time expired for a 2-0 Bates' lead at the half.

Continuing to play tough defensively despite constant pressure, USM kept the score 2-0 before the Bobcats scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of action.  Lindquist scored her first goal of the game in the 68th minute, and then added another tally with eight seconds left on the clock for the 4-0 final.

Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Cormier (Hiram, Maine/Sacopee Valley) made 10 saves for the Huskies.  Sophomore Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) added a defensive save for the Huskies.  Junior Adelae Durand (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) earned the win for Bates.  Durand did not face a shot in 70 minutes of action.

Southern Maine returns to action at home on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) when it hosts Little East Conference opponent Worcester State University.  Worcester State is presently atop the LEC standings with an 8-1 conference record and a 13-1 overall mark.  Bates College hosts Middlebury on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
