Huskies Must Wait for Possible NCAA Berth
BOSTON -- University of Massachusetts Boston sophomore southpaw JT Morin (Wilton, Conn.) limited the University of Southern Maine to three hits and one run over seven innings while striking out 10 to lead the Beacons to a 6-1 win over the Huskies in Game Five of the 2018 Little East Conference Championship Tournament being held at UMass Boston.
The loss eliminated the third-seeded Huskies from the six-team, double-elimination tournament after back-to-back losses to Rhode Island College and UMB. The Huskies finish the season 27-13 overall and must wait to hear of a possible NCAA tournament at-large berth.
The Beacons, 32-8 overall, are 2-0 in the tournament and will face the winner of the Rhode Island College-Eastern Connecticut State University game in a winners bracket game Friday.
Morin kept the Huskies off balance allowing just one hit over the first six innings. The Huskies did not get a hit off the left-hander until junior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) singled with one out in the fourth inning. The Huskies only run off Morin came in the seventh inning when sophomore Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) led off the inning with his first home run of the season.
USM junior right-hander Dalton Rice (Waterford, Maine/Oxford Hills) matched Morin over the first four innings allowing just three hits. In the fifth, Rice surrendered a one-out single to junior Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) followed by a walk to senior Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.). Senior Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) jumped on a Rice fastball to hammer a three-run homer over the right field fence giving the Beacons a 3-0 lead.
UMass Boston doubled its advantage with three more runs in the sixth inning. The Beacons loaded the bases against Rice on a single, hit batsman and a walk. Junior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) relieved Rice and got the first out on a force play at the plate. Murphy drove in two runs with a single through the left side to make it 5-0, and Boudrias scored the third run on wild pitch.
After Morin surrendered the Olszak homer, he got through the seventh inning getting his ninth and tenth strikeouts around a single from junior Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine). The final out came on a fly ball.
Fowler and Murphy combined for five of the UMB's eight hits and drove in five runs. Sophomore Anthony Cecere (Wakefield, Mass.) also had a pair of hits. Junior relievers Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.) and Bobby Tramondozzi (Peabody, Mass.) each pitched a scoreless inning.
USM was limited to just five hits in the game. Rice took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and five walks over 5.1 innings. Rice struck out six. Dexter pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
