GORHAM, Maine – Twenty University of Southern Maine student-athletes have been earned 2013 Little East Conference Fall All-Academic Team honors for their achievements in the classroom and in intercollegiate competition.

Recently announced by the LEC offices, the conference honored a total of 227 student-athletes in its seven fall championship sponsored sports: men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Huskies have at least one student-athletes recognized in each of the seven sports. The Huskies’ field hockey team, a perennial National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Team selection, has the largest contingent of student-athletes recognized with five.

Since the inception of the award during the 2007-2008 academic year, the criteria to earn a spot on the all-academic team requires that a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher through the 2013 spring semester and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The student-athlete must also be a full-time member of a varsity sport and be enrolled in its institution for a full academic year.

“We're very proud to have 20 of our fall athletes qualify as Little East Conference Scholar-Athletes,” noted long-time USM Athletic Director Al Bean.  “This is an outstanding achievement by each of these student-athletes and brings a sense of pride to the University and to the Athletics Department.  It's also worth noting that all seven of our LEC sponsored fall sports teams are represented among the list of award winners.  USM student-athletes continue to shine in both the academic and athletic arenas.  My sincere congratulations goes out to each of the award winners.”

Many of the 20 USM student-athletes have earned other accolades – either academically or athletically – during their 2013 season.  Sophomore Chris Dunn (Kennebunk, Maine) of the Huskies’ cross country team earned All-Little East Conference honors. Dunn finished sixth at the LEC Championship, helping the Huskies to a second place finish.  Senior Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H.), a first-year member of the women’s soccer team, earned second team all-conference honors and was named the Little East’s Rookie of the Year after leading the Huskies in goals scored.

Women’s tennis senior captain Mary Moran (Windham, Maine) earned second team all-conference honors, leading the Huskies from the no. one singles spot. It was the second time in her career that Moran earned all-conference honors.  Additionally, three members of the field hockey team senior Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine), Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine) and sophomore Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine) were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad, while the women’s volleyball team was recently given athletic department’s Remo Riciputi Award for having the highest team GPA at William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Banquet.
