Huskies’ Basketball Hosting Holiday Ugly Sweater Games on Saturday, December 8

GORHAM, Maine –  You know that hideous, horrible, blinking-light holiday sweater hanging in the back of your closet? Or the hand-knit sweater from your great gram with a bedazzled snow-covered cardinal? The one you said you'd never wear in public except to the dinner table when Great Gram was over for dinner? Well, the University of Southern Maine Huskies' basketball teams are offering you a chance to don that ugly sweater in public with a chance for prizes!

Join Huskies' basketball and USM's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this Saturday, December 8 (1:00 p.m./3:00 p.m.) at Hill Gym for its "Ugly Holiday Sweater Games." Come cheer on the Huskies as they take on  Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College.  All fans wearing an Ugly Holiday Sweater will be eligible to compete in a game of knockout at halftime of both the women's and men's basketball games for a chance to win a gift card to Gorham House of Pizza and Dunkin' Donuts.

In addition to the Husky Knockout contests of halftime, USM's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be hosting a 50/50 raffle to benefit Wishes for Weston.  Proceeds of the 50/50 raffle will be donated to the family of former USM men's lacrosse coach Sam Lane.  Lane's son, Weston, was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and to help offset the costs of his treatments and the various expenses associated with the medical treatments, USM SAAC is hoping to raise funds during both games.

"Our game against Rhode Island College is the last home game of the semester before our student-athletes prep for break and finals," said USM women's basketball coach and SAAC Advisor Samantha Allen.  "We are hoping this will be a fun, festive game environment for our fans, and a chance to assist a former colleague as we approach the holiday season.  I look forward to seeing the creativity and hopefully very ugly holiday sweaters in the stands for both games."

Women's basketball tips off at 1 p.m. vs. Rhode Island College, and will be followed by the men's game at approximately 3 p.m.  Admissions fees to the games are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children 12 and under.  USM students are admitted free with a valid student ID.  For fans that cannot attend the games and that would like to contribute to Wishes For Weston, there is a GoFundMe page established by a Lane family friend: Wishes For Weston
